Young woman drawing. Marie-Denise Villers (also known as Marie-Denise Lemoine). 1801. Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
Like snowflakes, the human pattern is never cast twice.
Alice Childress (1920-94), writer
Originally attributed to Jacques-Louis David, art historians now credit Marie-Denise Villers with this painting and believe that it is a self-portrait. Villers was primarily a portraitist and her artistic output was fairly limited. Young woman drawing is her finest work.
