Alice Childress (1920-94), writerOriginally attributed to Jacques-Louis David, art historians now credit Marie-Denise Villers with this painting and believe that it is a self-portrait. Villers was primarily a portraitist and her artistic output was fairly limited. Young woman drawing is her finest work.
