ROUNDSTONE
The Roundstone beaches at Gurteen and Dog's Bays are rare ecosystems due to their machair vegetation. Found exclusively in Scotland and on the west coast of Ireland, a machair is a former beach which is now higher than the adjacent beach due to a drop in sea level. Another unusual feature of these two beaches is their sand. Though usually the byproduct of rock erosion, the Roundstone sand forms from the shells of sea creatures (foraminifera).
